Hospital Bag Checklist: What to Pack and When

Pregnant woman packing a hospital bag at home

There's no perfect moment to pack your hospital bag — just a window where "I'll do it later" starts feeling riskier than doing it now. Most providers suggest having it ready by around week 36, though every pregnancy timeline is different.

For you

  • Comfortable going-home outfit, sized for right after birth, not before
  • Toiletries and a phone charger with a long cord
  • Comfortable, loose clothing for your hospital stay
  • Nursing bras or a comfortable bra if you plan to breastfeed
  • Any medications you take regularly
  • Insurance card, ID, and hospital paperwork

For the baby

  • A going-home outfit appropriate for the season
  • A few newborn-size onesies and swaddles
  • An installed and inspected infant car seat — most hospitals require one before discharge

For your partner or support person

  • A change of clothes and basic toiletries
  • Snacks and entertainment for what can be a long wait
  • A list of people to call once the baby arrives

Easy to forget, worth adding

  • Your own pillow, if hospital pillows aren't your thing
  • Lip balm and snacks for yourself
  • A small notebook for questions or instructions from your care team

When to actually pack it

Packing earlier rather than later takes one thing off your mind as you approach your due date — particularly since labor doesn't wait for a convenient moment. Keeping the bag by the door once it's packed is a small step that saves a scramble later.
