What to Wear: A Trimester-by-Trimester Guide to Maternity Clothing

Your body changes shape gradually, then all at once — and your closet has to keep up. Dressing for pregnancy isn't just about fitting a bigger belly; it's about comfort, practicality, and still feeling like yourself.

First trimester: work with what you have

Early on, most women don't need maternity clothes yet. Stretchy waistbands, looser tops, and layers can carry you through the first few months as your body starts to change gradually.

Second trimester: comfort starts to matter more

This is usually when maternity basics become genuinely useful: leggings or pants with a soft over-belly or under-belly panel, breathable fabrics, and tops with a bit of stretch. Look for natural fibers like cotton blends, which tend to breathe better as body temperature rises during pregnancy.

Third trimester: prioritize ease

Later in pregnancy, comfort and ease of movement usually take priority over everything else. A few practical things to look for:

  • Adjustable waistbands that can expand further in the final weeks
  • Front-opening tops if you're planning to breastfeed afterward
  • Slip-on shoes, since bending down gets harder
  • Supportive, well-fitted bras — your size may change more than once

What to look for, regardless of trimester

  • Breathable, natural fabrics over synthetic ones when possible
  • Room to layer, since body temperature can fluctuate
  • A few versatile pieces you can dress up or down, rather than a full new wardrobe

You don't need to buy an entirely new wardrobe at once — most women find a handful of well-chosen, comfortable pieces goes further than a full maternity haul.
